Nicotine, an anti-inflammation molecule
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nicotine, as one of the most important components of cigarette smoke and the key contributor of initiating and maintaining tobacco dependence, has anti-inflammatory effect in the cells of both nervous system and immune system. Among the different types of subunits of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR), α7 nAChR is related to the immune response. Nicotine exerts anti-inflammatory effect through cholinergic antiinflammatory pathway by binding to α7 nAChR. In this review, we summarized the molecular mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory effect of nicotine via binding to the α7 nAChR. We also reviewed the current findings of the nicotinic anti-inflammatory effect in various diseases and disorders. Especially, we focused on the nicotinic anti-inflammatory effect on influenza A virus infection.

Evaluation of the Effects of Nicotine on Mammalian Target of Rapamycin Complex 2 and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 Genes Expression in a Mouse Model of Allergic Asthma: An experimental study
Background & Aims: Allergic diseases have increased in the last decade worldwide and researchers have been trying to introduce new strategies and drugs to treat these types of diseases. Nicotine shows anti-inflammatory properties and the studies have revealed that it can reduce the inflammation and the allergic responses. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is a multifunctional protein kin...
متن کاملRenoprotective effects of long-term oral nicotine in a rat model of spontaneous proteinuria.
Many proteinuric renal conditions are accompanied by renal inflammation. Nicotine is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and is used in oral form to help subjects quit smoking. A potential anti-inflammatory role of nicotine in proteinuric renal diseases has not been investigated to date. We therefore evaluated the effects of oral nicotine in a rat model of proteinuria-induced renal infla...
متن کاملCholinergic stimulation blocks endothelial cell activation and leukocyte recruitment during inflammation
Endothelial cell activation plays a critical role in regulating leukocyte recruitment during inflammation and infection. Based on recent studies showing that acetylcholine and other cholinergic mediators suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines via the alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (alpha7 nAChR) expressed by macrophages and our observations that human microvascular endoth...
متن کاملInhibition of Toll-Like Receptor 2-Mediated Interleukin-8 Production in Cystic Fibrosis Airway Epithelial Cells via the α7-Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder characterised by chronic inflammation of the airways. The lung manifestations of CF include colonization with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus leading to neutrophil-dominated airway inflammation and tissue damage. Inflammation in the CF lung is initiated by microbial components which activate the innate immune response via Toll-like ...

Increased inflammation arising from an abnormal immune response can damage healthy tissue and lead to disease progression. An important example of this is the accumulation of inflammatory mediators in the kidney, which can subsequently lead to hypertension and renal injury. The origin of this inflammation may involve neuro-immune interactions. For example, the novel vagus nerve-to-spleen mechan...
